5 Habits to Maintain an Unprocessed Eating Lifestyle

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to fall into the trap of processed and convenience foods, which lack the nutritional value and freshness our bodies truly need. To maintain a healthier lifestyle and enjoy the benefits of unprocessed eating, developing some key habits that can make a significant difference in your food choices is essential. In this blog post, we'll explore five habits that can help you maintain unprocessed eating as part of your lifestyle.

Habit 1: Weekly Fridge Reset

Every week, I empty my fridge and inventory what's left over from the previous week's groceries. Instead of throwing away unused vegetables or food items, get creative and challenge yourself to create a meal. Leftover veggies can be turned into a delicious stir-fry, and scraps can be used to make vegetable broth or added to your compost pile. With the fridge emptied, it's a perfect time to wipe down the shelves to ensure a clean environment for storing your new groceries. I've found this reset habit to be essential for setting me up for a successful week ahead.

Habit 2: Online Grocery Shopping

Online grocery shopping is a game-changer in maintaining unprocessed eating habits. It offers convenience and helps you avoid impulse purchases that can lead to unhealthy choices. With a well-thought-out shopping list, you'll stick to your plan and avoid the temptation of processed and junk foods. Plus, you can save precious time by ordering online and choosing the pick-up option, bypassing crowded aisles and long checkout lines.

Habit 3: Food Prep

Investing some time in food preparation can make a world of difference in your unprocessed eating journey. Chop fresh vegetables, make homemade sauces, and roast nutritious options like sweet potatoes in advance. Having these items readily available in your kitchen makes it easier to assemble a healthy meal quickly, reducing the temptation to opt for processed alternatives. Prepping ingredients ahead of time also ensures you have the building blocks for nutritious meals at your fingertips. If prepping food all at once seems like a daunting habit to take on, remember that it can occur anytime during the week, not just on Sunday! You can prep food for the whole week ahead or do it on a day-by-day basis.

Habit 4: Create a Meal List

Creating a list of meals each week to choose from is another fantastic strategy to maintain unprocessed eating. Keep it on your fridge for easy access. With all your prepped ingredients and a list of go-to recipes, you can quickly decide what to make based on your mood and energy level. Having various meal options at your disposal ensures you won't get bored with your unprocessed eating habits and can easily adapt to your dietary preferences.

Habit 5: Join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)

Consider joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in your area. CSAs provide a regular supply of fresh, locally sourced, and often organic produce directly from farmers. This supports local agriculture and ensures you have a consistent supply of fresh, unprocessed ingredients. It's a great way to discover new fruits and vegetables while staying connected to the seasons and the local food community.

As many know, joining a CSA has been my journey's most significant difference.

Maintaining unprocessed eating habits is a rewarding journey toward better health and well-being. By adopting these five lifestyle habits - weekly fridge clean-out, online grocery shopping, food prep, creating a meal list, and joining a CSA - you'll find it easier to stick to your unprocessed eating goals.

Remember, making small changes in your daily routine can significantly improve your overall diet and, ultimately, your quality of life. So, start incorporating these habits today and savor the benefits of unprocessed eating. Your body and mind will thank you!
